I will just toss in that there is what I call the sweet spot on most guys, most of the time is just at there diaphragm and as it has been pointed out how high or low it in depends a lot on the body type. As in tall long guys vs the shorter stocky guys. But will say if you’re looking to take and drain the breath out of a guy, be it using a cross body or a body triangle if you can find that spot on your opponent works the best and tends to be the safest. And for the most part there is no real pain if you slow constrict the guy, you’re just robbing them of the air they need to feed their muscles. Does not take that long before a guy gets weak. Just my take on it. But is a wicked hold if your able to keep pressure up around a guy and kick back and watch the fun as they get weaker and weaker over time!---lol
Depends on what your goal is and what position you're in. From the guard and back mount around the floating ribs. Often times in this position people extend their legs toward the hips which can make it less effective as you can get caught on the hips which aren't compressible.
Cross bodyscissors are tricky but generally you want to start higher so you're on the lower ribs. The abs don't hurt nearly as much and you may or may not disrupt breathing if you're too low. That and most people tend to push your legs that way anyway and, again, if you get hung up on the hips that can kill your ability to produce power.
Body triangles will generally go across the belly. If you try to set up too high you're liable to pop a rib. There are things you can do to cause pain later but for the set up you want to be clean between the ribs and hips with no hip interference.
It depends on many factors such as how long and strong your legs are, and how your opponent is built. On a thinner athletic guy, its often around the midriff. On a stockier guy its often lower. And if your legs are long and the guy is stocky, if your top leg starts below the belly button and forces the belly up and in before squeezing you will have an unusual amount of control.

1/22/2022 2:10 PMAs a novice, where is the best area to apply a body scissors? Is it across the ribs, around the midriff/lower ribs or lower down around the stomach ?
